Firefox makes more gains on Internet Explorer

ie7_firefox.thumbnailFirefox continued to make ground on Internet Explorer in 2007, even threatening to overtake Microsoft’s dominance in several European countries.

Figures released by Xiti Monitor reveal that Firefox is close to toppling Internet Explorer in countries such as Finland, where it enjoys a 45% market share, as well as Poland, Slovenia and Hungary where it also enjoys market share between 40% and 42%. In Western Europe, Germany leads the way with a 34% share.

While Firefox continues to grow, the figures reveal that Internet Explorer is still by far the dominant browser holding a 66.1% share of the worldwide market, as opposed to Firefox’s 28%, which still represents a new high for the open-source browser.

Of the remaining browsers, Opera fares best with a 3.3% share, while Safari trails with only 2%.

Windows 7 pushed forward

microsoft_entranceReports are suggesting that Microsoft is considering pushing forward the release date of Windows 7, its successor to Vista.

APC Magazine claims to have seen Microsoft’s roadmap for the operating system, and reports that the software giant is gunning for a 2009 release to manufacturing, a year earlier than initially planned.

The roadmap apparently contains three distinct milestone builds for Windows 7, with the first build, M1, apparently already shipped to partners for code validation.

M1 is reported to be English language only, but is shipping in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. M2 is slated to ship in April or May, while M3 is expected some time in the third quarter of 2008.

Why QBS PC Help use ems page styling

vistaultimate.jpgWe are pleased to announce our latest web design article ‘Why QBS PC Help use ems page styling’.

Ems and Percentages are considered the “best” units for sizing fonts and layouts in CSS. They are resizeable in all modern Web browsers that support resizing and they are specified relative to the user’s font size preferences, and can therefore adapt to the viewer’s screen.

To read more about ems and percentages and grab a free web template that shows how ems and percentage styling works click here.

Website design tip – lorem ipsum text

loremIf you are designing web sites you no doubt use dummy images and dummy text during the initial design phase, just as we do.

‘Lorem Ipsum’ text is a super way to dump a block of text onto a page which can then be styled and positioned to get shape and form to your developing web pages. We often use this when we are awaiting final copy from our web design clients.

If you need a copy of this ‘Lorem Ipsum’ text you can download it from our server – http://www.qbs-pchelp.co.uk/downloads/Loremipsum.txt

Apple unveils MacBook Air and iTunes movie rentals

macbook_airApple on Tuesday launched an aluminium-clad laptop, the MacBook Air, just three-quarters of an inch thick, seeking to bring a new computer to market with the same cachet as its iPod and iPhone devices.

Apple also said it would let people rent films over the web with upgrades to its iTunes online media store, a technological challenge to a movie industry still largely focused on DVD’s.

Shares of movie rental firms Netflix and Blockbuster fell sharply in response, and Apple’s own stock lost 5.5 percent since the announcements were widely expected and chief executive Steve Jobs failed to conjure up any big surprises.

Microsoft makes Vista SP1 release candidate public

microsoft_entranceMicrosoft has made the latest version of Vista’s Service Pack 1 release candidate available for download to the general public, after initially restricting it to 15,000 beta testers when it debued last week.

SP1 RC Refresh, as the update is known, requires previous versions of SP1 to be uninstalled before it can be replaced with Refresh, which may entail waiting for the computer to “reboot multiple times”, according to Microsoft.

Refresh is time-limited, with the deadline for uninstall being 30 June, 2008.
