Microsoft brings Windows 7 to other devices

windows 7Microsoft announced Tuesday (27 April) it has finished the task of customizing Windows 7 to run on TV’s, set-top boxes, digital signs, and other devices.

Microsoft’s Kevin Dallas on Tuesday shows off an embedded version of Windows 7 designed to run on TVs, set-top boxes, and other devices.

Among other things, the new software could allow Windows Media Center on new types of devices, Microsoft said. The operating system, dubbed Windows Embedded Standard 7, was shown Tuesday at the ESC Silicon Valley conference in San Jose, Calif. “With the release of Windows Embedded Standard 7, Microsoft has furthered its commitment to the integration of Windows 7 technologies in the specialized consumer and enterprise device markets,” said Kevin Dallas, general manager of Microsoft’s Windows Embedded unit.

Microsoft first showed the embedded software, previously code-named Quebec, at ESC Boston in September. At that point, Microsoft was calling it Windows Embedded Standard 2011.

The PC version of Windows 7 is already running on more than 10 percent of computers worldwide, Microsoft said last week as it announced quarterly earnings.

Google warning on fake anti-virus software

facebookprotectionFake anti-virus software that infect PC’s with malicious code are a growing threat, according to a study by Google.

Its analysis of 240m web pages over 13 months showed that fake anti-virus programs accounted for 15% of all malicious software.

Scammers trick people into downloading programs by convincing them that their PC is infected with a virus. Once installed, the software may steal data or force people to make a payment to register the fake product.

“Surprisingly, many users fall victim to these attacks and pay to register the fake anti-virus software,” the study said. “To add insult to injury, Fake anti-viruses often are bundled with other malware, which remains on a victim’s computer regardless of whether a payment is made.”

More than half of the fake software was delivered via adverts, said Google.

How to make full use of Windows 7′s Libraries feature

Libraries are a new feature of Windows 7 and can sort all your media and files so that you can easily view them in one place. And the files that are pulled together by the Library can be located anywhere on your computer, even if they are scattered across multiple folders or multiple storage devices.

Windows 7 has 4 default Libraries – Documents – Music – Pictures and Videos (If you ever remove or change these Libraries, you can quickly restore them by right-clicking Libraries in Windows Explorer, and then clicking Restore default libraries).

In many ways, a Library is similar to a folder. When you open a Library, you will see one or more files or folders. However, unlike a folder, a Library can display files that are stored in several folders at the same time. This is an important, difference. Libraries don’t actually store items. They monitor folders that contain your files, images and videos, and provide a single access point.

Creating Libraries

windows7_librariesYou can create your own Libraries and add folder locations to them. You can create Libraries for any set of files that you don’t feel are well covered by the default Libraries. For example, you might create a new Work Documents Library to keep work-related documents separate from personal documents.

Creating a new Library is easy. Just right-click Libraries in the Navigation Pane on the left side of an Explorer window, point to New, and then click Library.

library_right_clickAfter creating a Library, it’s time to add your folder locations. Right-click a Library, and then click Properties to edit the folder locations that the Library includes, as well as other properties. You add folders to the Library view by clicking the Include a Folder button. You can then select the folders you want to add. Also choose how you want the Library to optimize your Library files. The choice is General Items – Documents – Music – Pictures or Videos.

By using the Library Properties dialog box you can include new folder locations or remove existing folder locations. Removing folder locations from Libraries or deleting entire Libraries doesn’t actually delete the files from where they’re stored; you are simply removing them from the overall view that the Library provides.

You will find that Libraries are used throughout Windows 7.

Security update hits Window PC’s

Is this fake softwareThousands of PC’s around the world have been paralysed by a security update that wrongly labelled part of Windows as a virus.

The update was sent out by security firm McAfee and made affected PC’s endlessly restart.

Corporate customers of McAfee seemed to be hardest hit but some individuals reported problems too.

McAfee apologised for the mistake and released a fix to ensure PCs started working again.

The problems were caused by an update to the long list McAfee’s anti-virus uses to identify which programs are malicious.

McAfee’s 5958 update wrongly identified the Windows svchost.exe file as the wecorl.a virus. This worm tries to replace an existing svchost file with its own version to help it take over a machine. The update wrongly labelled svchost as the virus and then quarantined it. This caused many PC’s to crash as Windows uses many copies of the file to keep the operating system going.

Computers inside businesses running Windows XP with service pack 3 applied were the hardest hit according to reports. The University of Michigan said 8,000 of its 25,000 computers were hit by the faulty update.

Infected XP owners left totally unpatched

windowsxp-sales-boxSome of the latest security updates for Windows XP will not be installed on machines infected with a rootkit virus.

A rootkit is sneaky malware that buries itself deep inside the Windows operating system to avoid detection.

Microsoft said it had taken the action because similar updates issued in February made machines infected with the Alureon rootkit crash endlessly.

The latest updates can spot if a system is compromised by the Alureon rootkit and halt installation.

The latest batch of updates for Windows was released on 16 April and some of them fix vulnerabilities in the core, or kernel, of Windows. This is the same place that rootkits try to take up residence.

When Alureon is present it monitors net traffic and plucks out user names, passwords and credit card numbers. It also gives attackers a back door into infected machines.

The virus first appeared in 2008 and has been spread via discussion forums, hacked websites and bogus pay-per-click affiliate schemes. By not applying the patch, Microsoft hopes to avoid a repeat of events in February which left many people struggling to get their computer working again. Microsoft also wants to avoid a situation in which people become wary of updates because they provoke a crash.

PC shipments bounce back in first quarter

acer aspire 5738ZThe PC industry bounced back during the end of 2009, and was able to continue its momentum through the first quarter of 2010.

PC shipments rose 24 percent from the same quarter a year ago to 79.1 million units worldwide, according to IDC’s Quarterly PC Tracker report, issued on Wednesday. It’s the second straight quarter of double-digit growth, and indicates the industry is on its way to recovery after a disastrous late 2008 and most of 2009.

Why you must back up your computer files

acronis true image home 2010Backing up files is a very important part of maintaining your computer and can save a lot of hassle if your PC ever experiences a hard drive failure.

The idea of a backup is to make copies of your most important files, music, pictures and documents so you can store them on another device of some kind (e.g. a separate internal hard drive, DVD’s, CD’s, flash drives and external drives). It always pays to remember that PC’s have a tendency to go wrong from time to time and although total hard drive failure is comparatively rare, this can occasionally happen.

One of the more common problems nowadays is the threat from deadly viruses, with some of the more serious ones infecting the master boot record or sector 0 of the hard drive. Both of these infections could require the use of software tools that can overwrite all the data on your drive.

Operating system failure and bad software installation are other things that can cause problems when it comes to recovering files from a damaged drive.

How frequently you back up your files and documents will depend on how often you use your PC and what you use it for. The average home user will probably just have to do a full back-up (or drive image) once a week or once per month. However, when PC’s are used in a home office environment backing up should be done more frequently. One rule of thumb would be if your important files change daily, back-up daily, if they change weekly, back-up weekly, and so on.

So what hardware and software should you use to get your regular backup routine established?

CD Writers

CD Writers are ideal for making back-ups of small amounts of data.

A typical CD disk holds up to 650Mb of data and each disc only costs pennies.

DVD Writers

For an even greater storage capacity of 4GB or more DVD discs are ideal for backing up all your documents, music and photographs. These are also ideal if you take an image of your hard drive so that you can quickly reinstall your operating system, programs and files if your computer crashes. (be warned – preparing a drive image will take several DVD’s)

Flash Drives

Flash drives might be small but they contain large amounts of data.  A 16GB Flash Drive is not uncommon and will generally backup all your important stuff much quicker than a CD or DVD writer.

Another Hard Drive

If you have two separate hard drives in your PC you can backup everything to the second hard drive. The chances of both drives crashing at the same time are remote. You can also backup everything to an external hard drive.

Backing up to an internal or external drive certainly makes for an easy backup routine.

Backup Software

A great software program for handling backups and drive images is Acronis True Image.

The latest and best version is Acronis True Image Home 2010. This software creates an exact copy of your hard disk and allows you to instantly restore the entire machine including operating system, applications, and all the data in the event of a fatal system crash or virus attack – no reinstallations required! With the new version you also can easily back up your music, video, and digital photos, as well as Outlook e-mails, contacts, calendar, tasks, and user settings with just a few mouse clicks!

We use Acronis True Image Home for all our backup requirements and can thoroughly recommend it – Buy Acronis True Image Home 2010 now.

How to thoroughly clean your computer

xpsdt_210Cleaning your computer, computer components and peripherals helps to keep everything in good working condition.

A general rule of thumb is to clean your PC’s case every week or so and every 2-3 months clean the inside of your PC.

General Cleaning Tips

1. When cleaning a component and/or the computer itself, switch it off before cleaning.

2. Never spray or squirt any type of liquid onto any computer component. If a spray is needed, spray the liquid onto a lint free cloth and then use that cloth to rub down the component.

3. You can use a vacuum to suck up dirt, dust, or hair around your computer on the outside case and on your keyboard. However, do not use a standard vacuum for the inside of your computer as it generates a lot of static electricity that can damage the internal components of your pc. For cleaning inside use a pressurised air duster.

4. When cleaning, be careful not to accidentally adjust any controls or unplug a cable.

Case Cleaning

The plastic or metal case that houses your PC’s components can be cleaned with a lint free cloth that has been slightly dampened with tap water. For stubborn stains, add a little household detergent to the cloth. It is strongly recommended that you never use a solvent cleaner on a plastic case. Make sure all vents and air holes are hair and lint free by rubbing a cloth over the holes and the vents. It is also helpful to take a vacuum around each of the hole, vents, and crevices on the computer. It is safe to use a standard vacuum when cleaning the outside vents of a computer.

Dust and especially particles of cigarette smoke can build up and corrode circuitry causing various problems such as computer lock-ups. So cleaning the inside of your PC is vitally important.

When inside the computer take the necessary anti static precautions and be careful not to dislodge any cables or other connections.

To clean the PC’s Motherboard it’s best to use compressed air. Compressed air is pressurized air contained in a can with a very long nozzle. When using compressed air, hold it in the up-right position; otherwise, it is possible chemicals may come out of the container that could damage or corrode the motherboard or another component within your pc. Also, ensure when using compressed air that you always blow the dust or dirt away from the motherboard, or out of the case.

An alternative to compressed air is to use a small portable battery powered vacuum that can effectively remove the dust and dirt from the motherboard completely and prevent it from getting trapped within the case. (However, do not use a standard electricity powered vacuum as it can cause a lot of static electricity that can damage your computer). When using the vacuum it is vital that you stay six or more inches away from the motherboard and all other components to help prevent contact as well as to help prevent anything from being sucked into the vacuum. Ensure that you do not accidentally remove any small components when using a vacuum.

When cleaning the inside of the case also look at any fans and/or heat sinks. Dust and dirt often collect around these exposed components.

When cleaning internal fans, you should turn the power off and either hold the fan or place something in-between the fan blades to prevent it from spinning, as you carefully clean the fan. Spraying compressed air into a fan will clean it effectively (but be aware that this may cause damage to some fans).

If you’d rather not use compressed air try cotton swabs or foam swabs moistened with rubbing alcohol or water. Generally, it is better to use lint-free swabs such as the foam swabs.

Keyboard Cleaning

Many people clean the keyboard by turning it upside down and shaking it. A much more effective method is to turn off your PC or disconnect your keyboard and then use compressed air or a vacuum. Compressed air is pressurized air contained in a can with a very long nozzle. Simply aim the air between the keys and blow away all of the dust and debris that has gathered there. A vacuum cleaner can also be used, but make sure the keyboard doesn’t have any loose keys that could possibly be sucked up by the vacuum.

A keyboard that is used by multiple people, such as students or different employees, may need to be disinfected to limit the spread of any germs. Once again, turn off the computer or disconnect your keyboard. Spray a little diluted household disinfectant onto a lint free cloth and carefully rub each of the keys on the keyboard.

Flat Screen Monitors

When cleaning an LCD screen it is important not to spray any liquids onto the LCD directly. Do not use a paper towel as this may cause the LCD to become scratched. To clean the LCD screen use a soft cotton cloth; if a dry cloth does not completely clean the screen, you can apply rubbing alcohol (*Isopropyl Alcohol ) to the cloth and wipe the screen with the damp cloth. Rubbing alcohol is actually used to clean LCD screens before they leave the factory.

CRT Monitors

The glass CRT monitor screen can be cleaned with ordinary household glass cleaner. Be sure to turn off the monitor before your start cleaning it. And unplug its power cord. Spray the cleaner onto a lint free cloth so the fluid doesn’t leak into the electrical components inside the monitor. Vacuum off any dust that has settled on top of the monitor and make sure nothing is obscuring the monitors air vents. Obstructed monitor vents can cause the monitor to overheat or even catch on fire.

With a screen that has any type of anti-glare protection, use a lint free cloth dampened with just tap water when cleaning. (Beware – cleaners with ammonia can remove anti-glare protection and/or other special surfaces on CRT monitors.)

Wireless Mouse

The wireless mouse is generally a closed unit. The only access to it inner workings is to a panel that can be removed to replace the batteries. Just make sure that you keep the mouse clean by using a lint free cloth, very slightly dampened with tap water, to clean the the mouse’s exterior surfaces.

Optical/Mechanical Mouse

To clean the rollers of an optical-mechanical mouse, you must first remove the bottom cover of the mouse. To do this, examine the bottom of the mouse to see which direction the mouse cover should be rotated. Place two fingers on the mouse cover and push in the direction of the arrows. Once the cover has rotated about an inch, rotate the mouse into its normal position, covering the bottom of the mouse with one hand and the bottom should fall off including the mouse ball. If this does not occur, attempt to shake the mouse gently.

Once the bottom cover and the ball are removed, you should be able to see three rollers located within the mouse. Use a cotton swab and/or your finger and move in a horizontal direction of the rollers removing and dirt and fluff which normally accumulates in the middle of the roller.

Once you have removed as much dirt and fluff as possible, place the ball back within the mouse and place the cover back on.

*Isopropyl Alcohol is available from Amazon.co.uk and Maplin Electronics.

The 50p-per-month broadband tax has been scrapped!

broadband cableThe Government has heeded calls by the public and dropped unpopular proposals to introduce a ‘broadband tax’. The levy, intended to help finance the provision of faster broadband across the country, would have seen households forking out an extra £6 per year. The subsidy would have been added to household phone bills.

The levy was proposed by the Government last year in a bid to ramp-up the roll out of the fibre-optic broadband network and ensure 90 per cent of the UK has access to super-fast broadband by 2017.

The tax, which was expected to raise around £170m, would have made up part of the £1bn Next Generation Fund, that will be used to pay for the roll-out of fibre-optic networks.

However, the Conservative Party was heavily against the tax, instead believing the TV Licence Fee and private investors should cover the cost of rolling out fibre-optic broadband.

The tax was one of three proposed charges dumped from the Finance Bill as the Government prepares to push legislation through before Parliament is dissolved on 12 April in preparation for the General Election.

Marketing and Branding a Facebook Business Page

facebook wallMarketing and branding your Facebook Business Page can take time. You can’t just set up a Businesss Page and hope that people find you. If there is nothing on your page that interests people, no one will become a fan.

Try posting open-ended questions to entice responses from your fans such as what is your favourite widget? What do you like about this widget or how did you find our widget?

Posting links and photos are also a great way to get people interested, plus they are more visually appealing so people are more likely to pay attention.

Posting links that point to your website has the benefit of pushing people to your site to find out more about you and your Company. Try posting on your Business Wall page every time you update your blog.

You have to be a little proactive about getting fans, especially when your Business Page is new.

A couple of good ideas is to add your Facebook URL to your email signature and use the free badges and widgets that Facebook provides and add them to your website. And don’t forget to mention your business page in your blog posts and your twitter tweets. If you have a newsletter mention your Facebook Business Pages to your subscribers.

The more people in your network who find out about your page, the more friends you can make, and the larger your network becomes.

Once you have some supporters of your Page, you want to encourage more dialogue and interaction between yourself and them and even among each other. The biggest impact comes from simply having conversations with people.

Facebook Advertising

Facebook Advertising is a worth exploring. This allows you to place small display type ads in the right sidebar of Facebook pages and profiles. Currently it’s not as effective in pure responses as a well targeted Google AdWords campaigns. But it’s not really the same kind of vehicle and in any case you won’t find Google AdWords in Facebook at the moment.

Advertising space is a bit limited in these Facebook ads so use it wisely. Your headline (25 characters) should grab attention immediately with a strong benefit. There’s another 135 characters, in the body of the ad, you can use to attract your potential followers. You also have the option to upload an image. Take this option. It may be the most important aspect of your ad as Facebook users are very image driven (it’s the largest photo sharing site in the world) and the visual graphic you choose will make or break an ad.

To find out more about advertising with Facebokk see this page – http://www.facebook.com/advertising.

Customising Facebook

There are many more things you can add to your Facebook Business Pages such as customisable app’s, connecting the main page to your Twitter feed and blog. There are many other app’s and widgets to choose from.

The introduction of Facebook Applications is probably one of the most popular moves ever made by Facebook. They released their API so that developers and business owners could collaborate to create fun and cool applications that engage users. The applications created so far widely vary in purpose – some are fun games, some are useful, some are directly related and tied into businesses and some are just plain utilities, but still useful.

Many popular applications have hundreds of thousands of monthly active users and that information speaks for itself. If you want to read more about creating your own applications for Facebook, you should check out the Facebook Developers page.

Once you have an application created, be sure to add it to your profile and to your Facebook group and page.

Boxes and the FBML App

A new default tab called Boxes holds lots of potential for businesses as well. Think of a box page as a free form scratch pad. You can add up to 10 of what Facebook calls FBML elements (you must add the Facebook Static FBML application to your app’s to edit these). FBML is Facebook’s mark-up language but these elements will take any HTML as well. So you have the ability to add newsletter sign-up forms, ebook downloads, and other HTML based elements. (You can add any of the default elements such as video or discussions as well.) Once you create the elements you can slide them around the page to the get them to display as you like, but you must go to the wall page and hit Edit the page to edit an individual FBML element that’s already installed.

You can even create custom landing pages inside of your Facebook Page and promote them as entry points.

One source of frustration at the moment is that many app’s don’t work with the latest update. Facebook’s included app’s, such as video, events, photos and discussion, all good ones for your Page, seem to work, but many other 3rd party app’s do not.

Facebook Widgets

In addition to all the app’s you can also make use of Facebook Widgets that can help spread the word about your new Facebook Business Page. You can check these out at http://www.facebook.com/facebook-widgets. Once you have something like this on your website and blog, visitors can just click on it and they will land on your Facebook Business Page where they can become a fan.

Finally If you don’t have a Facebook Business Page yet, head over to http://www.facebook.com and get started. You won’t regret it!

Here’s an example of a simple widget:

Using Facebook as a branding strategy for your online business

Facebook has undergone a few changes of late and is now a much more viral experience for you and your potential or existing customers (collectively called Fans in Facebook).

The new Facebook Business Page layout is divided into two distinct areas.

The left-most column is where your brand logo, business information summary, fans, links and admin links can be located. Make sure you write something interesting about your company in this left column. Be sure to include a link to your website here. Your description can be changed at any time, so this is also a great place to highlight a promotion or some other news about your company.

The right hand column is the certainly the largest and is divided into a series of tabs, with the Wall tab generally being the default view.

The Wall acts as a Twitter-style update feed that puts your business news directly on your Facebook Business Page.

When you are logged into Facebook and click Edit Page a third column appears containing blocks of advertising.

Facebook wallAs you make changes, add links and share other information on your Facebook Business Page, it automatically appears in the new Wall feed.

Updates and Wall posts made by your fans are also shown in this Wall feed.

And any updates that you add also appear on all your Fans Walls, so this can be a truly viral experience.

Sign up for a Facebook Business Account

Go to the Facebook sign up page and create your Business Account – www.facebook.com. Once you are logged into Facebook, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Advertising,” and then click “Pages.” at the top of the page. There is some great information here, so take a moment to read through the information and when you are ready click “Create Page.”

As you go through the set-up process, remember that you must categorise your company in the right area to help people find you business.

Setting Up a Business Page

One of the first things you need to do when you set up a new Facebook Page is to give it a title. A tip with this is to think about using rich keywords related to your business that you would like to be found for. Use your own collection of keywords and choose the main one that currently attracts people to your website or blog. (If you need to produce keywords for your advertising campaigns try this free tool.)

You also want to choose a good, clear photo for your Facebook Page. This can be a personal picture or your company’s logo.

facebook-editpage When setting up your page you will have to decide if you want visitors to be able to post messages for everybody to see or if you only want your own messages shown. It may be best to allow everything, as this will help to build your Wall content faster because people love to post messages.

When you are logged in and at the Wall, click Edit Page (under your Logo or picture) and edit the Wall settings. Select the options you require for your business.

If the posts become out of control or unflattering, you can always delete individual posts or change the settings later.

One of the great things about Facebook is the ease of set up.

Setting up a business page is really just about carefully finding your way around and following the various prompts.

Other Tabs

At the top of your new Facebook Wall you will see an Info Tab where you can create a full-length version of your company information.

There are also Tabs for Custom Facebook Applications that you choose to add to your Business Page, like RSS feeds Pictures and other applications.

Once you fill in all of the basic information, save everything. You have now successfully created your Facebook Business Page.

Provide Interesting and Useful Comments

It is important for you to let people know about your Business Page. This is where having an already active Business Page comes in handy because if you already have a lot of people who are interested in your Company, you can suggest your new Facebook Business Page to them.

Just like in other areas of social media (blog’s, linkden, twitter, etc), it’s extremely important to provide interesting content to your readers.

You should add fresh content and updates to your Facebook Business Page on a regular basis (daily or weekly). This will keep your fans returning to your page. And Fans that do return, are far more likely to become paying customers at some point.

When you update your Facebook Business Page you’ll need to find a good balance between getting your business message across to your Facebook Fans without commercially spamming them. Keep the updates light and useful rather than advertising-heavy.

Offering regular and useful content will naturally encourage interaction because you are giving people something to respond to. You don’t need to come up with all the content yourself, either. You might just link to an interesting article or blog post you have found on the web that’s related to your business or industry.

To help with this content creation you can also use an application like Notes to enter your blog’s RSS details so that it pulls your blog posts straight into your Wall. The Notes application can be found in the Application settings section of your facebook account (Edit Page/Applications/Notes).

Keep in mind that a user can simply click a little X beside your update in their news feed to hide all future news updates about you. So make your updates newsworthy and interesting but do not aggressively promote your business as other Facebook users will probably frown on this.

Ultimately, the more time you invest in your Business Facebook page, the better response you will get from it.

UK Mobile phone charges to fall

microsoft windows mobileCallers to UK mobile phones could see cheaper bills from 2011 after a ruling by telecoms regulator Ofcom.

It has cut the cost mobile phone firms can charge for connecting a call from another network or landline from 4.3 pence per minute to 0.5p by 2015.

Ofcom has also issued new rules to make it quicker and easier to switch mobile phone providers. Customers should, by 2011, be able to change mobile providers in one working day rather than two. In addition, mobile phone companies will have to issue users with the Pac code they need in order to keep their existing mobile number by text message within a maximum of two hours, Ofcom said.

Ofcom research shows that 70% of customers want to keep their mobile number when they change providers. Ofcom’s latest ruling follows instructions from the European Commission last year that charges should reflect only the cost of establishing connection.
