Malware warning for Smartphones

smartphone securityA national computer security campaign is urging smartphone users to do more to protect themselves from unwittingly downloading malware applications.

Get Safe Online says that there has been an increase in smartphone malware as the market has grown.

Criminals are typically creating Trojan copies of reputable apps and tricking users into installing them. Once on the phone, the app can secretly generate cash for criminals through premium rate text messages.

Get Safe Online, a joint initiative between the government, police and industry, said it was concerned that users of smartphones, such as Android devices, were not taking steps to protect their devices.

Get Safe Online said fraudsters are designing apps which generate cash secretly in the background without the owner realising until their monthly bill.

A typical scam involves an app designed to send texts to premium rate services without the user knowing. Apps can appear to be bona fide software or sometimes masquerade as stripped down free versions of well-known games.

Rik Ferguson, a hacking researcher with internet security firm Trend Micro, said: “This type of malware is capable of sending a steady stream of text messages to premium rate numbers – in some instances we’ve seen one being sent every minute. With costs of up to £6 per message, this can be extremely lucrative. The user won’t know this is taking place, even if they happen to be using the device at the same time, as the activity takes place within the device’s back-end infrastructure.”

10 Android apps account for 43% of usage

The top 10 apps for Android mobile devices account for 43 per cent of usage, according to a new survey.

The typical user of a Google Android-powered smartphone spends 56 minutes a day using apps or on the mobile web, research from Nielsen Smartphone Analytics has found.

Two-thirds of that time is spent using apps but Nielsen found that just a few apps are dominating.

The top 10 Android apps make up 43 per cent of time on mobile apps and the top 50 apps account for 61 per cent of time spent. “With 250,000+ Android apps available at the time of this writing, that means the remaining 249,950+ apps have to compete for the remaining 39 percent of the pie,” Don Kellogg, director of telecom research and insights for Nielsen, wrote in a blog post.

Although Nielsen did not specify which Android apps were part of its top ten survey, other Internet sources suggest that the top 10 free apps are (in no particular order) YouTube, Google Maps, Amazon Kindle, Facebook, Pandora, Angry Birds, Dragon Fly, Words with Friends, Advanced Task Killer, and Angry Birds Rio. The top 10 paid apps are (again in no particular order) Cut the Rope, Beautiful Widgets, Fruit Ninja, PowerAMP Full, SwiftKey X, Robo Defense, ROM Manager, Doodle Jump, SoundHound, and ADW Launcher.

Interestingly, 40 per cent of the top 10 free and paid Android apps are games. The rest are a mix of utilities and other media/social networking apps.

Specifically, McAfee announced McAfee Mobile Security and WaveSecure Tablet Edition.

The general idea is that this software secures mobile devices as they swap between consumer, work and personal usage.

Tablets and smartphones are the next growth market for antivirus protection. And given that Android devices are quickly becoming a popular attack vector, McAfee is initially focusing on that platform.

The suite offers:

  • Backup and data restoration
  • Remote locking
  • Alarms in case a device is stolen
  • Remote data removal
  • Anti-malware software and phishing detection
  • A portal to manage multiple devices

UK mobile full broadband coverage – or the lack of it!

Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II 16GB Sim Free SmartphoneeBay has complained to Ofcom about a lack of mobile broadband coverage in parts of the UK, that’s making people miss out on bargains that are only available using online shopping channels.

According to research conducted on behalf of eBay, 16 percent of the UK remains an “m-commerce not-spot”, meaning mobile spending in such areas is at least 20 percent below the national average.

The Scottish highlands and islands and rural areas of England and Wales fared worst in the study, which was carried out by Verdict.

“Mobile shopping represents a massive opportunity not just for retailers, but for the economy as a whole,” eBay UK retail director Angus McCarey said in a statement. “But our research shows that consumers and retailers are missing out as the cost and reliability of mobile broadband prevents shoppers from spending.”

The company reckons UK retailers would be getting £1.3bn more a year if mobile connectivity was not so patchy.

It has complained to the regulator now, it said, because Ofcom is currently consulting on the rules for the upcoming ’4G’ mobile broadband spectrum auction.

Nokia uploads MeeGo N9 teaser video

Nokia Meego N9 interfaceNokia has shown off a video and screenshots of its new N9 MeeGo device, which is likely to be the only smartphone ever to carry the Linux-based operating system.

The company uploaded the video to YouTube on Tuesday (which has now been deleted), showing a device that closely resembles the Nokia E7 smartphone, which also has a slide-out Qwerty keyboard. Four photos went up on the MeeGo Facebook page on the same day, showing the user interface. The UI of the N9 looks very similar to that on the iPhone and Android-based competitors.

MeeGo was to be Nokia’s big contender against the OS and Android operating systems, until Nokia’s big tie-in with Microsoft around the Windows Phone platform effectively killed off both MeeGo and Symbian, the company’s other major OS. When that deal was announced, Nokia said it would release one MeeGo device, and only “as an opportunity to learn – about some of the wonderful work we’ve done around user experience”.

The operating system is a fusion of Nokia’s previous Maemo OS and Intel’s Moblin OS. It was only announced little more than a year ago. Although Intel is no longer in partnership with Nokia because of the Microsoft deal, it still intends to ship MeeGo-based tablets this year.

Nokia Drop sends links & photos from desktop to phone

Nokia DropNokia has released a beta application that lets people send links and photos from their desktop browser to their Symbian handsets.

Called Nokia Drop, this experimental app is similar to Google’s ‘Chrome to Phone‘ service for Android users.

There are two parts to Nokia Drop, the app for your phone and a plug-in for your browser, which can be either Chrome or Firefox.

Installing the browser extension is the first step in the process and will leave you with the Nokia Drop icon at the top of your screen.

The next step is to install mobile client onto your device, which will then sit there waiting for something to be transferred.

When you browse the Internet, you can right click on a picture and select the Nokia Drop option, followed by Send image or Send as wallpaper which will open up the app on your phone. If you selected the latter option, whichever homescreen you were on at the time would now have the new wallpaper. If you select just to send the image, it will sit in your photo gallery for use at a later time.

You may find a website that you want to visit later on, while you’re away from your computer. Just move your pointer over the URL and right click, selecting Nokia Drop, Send link. It will sit in the app on your phone ready for you to click it.

According to a post published on the Nokia blog on Wednesday, the Nokia Drop app was built using the cross-platform Qt framework.

Nokia Drop is available for free, and the company is encouraging feedback to its Beta Labs team. The app is currently available for Nokia N8-00, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7-00, Nokia E7-00, Nokia X6-00, Nokia 5228, Nokia 5230, Nokia 5235, Nokia 5530, Nokia C6-00, Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 mini.

O2 to launch free Wi-Fi hotspot network

googles nexus smartphoneMobile operator O2 plans to launch a 15,000-strong nationwide network of free Wi-Fi hotspots located in public places such as coffee shops, and open to customers and non-customers alike.

The scheme, known as O2 Wi-Fi, will begin by replacing the mobile operator’s existing 450 O2 Cloud hotspots, the company said in its announcement on Wednesday. It has promised that by 2013, it will at least double the number of existing premium hotspots offered by BT OpenZone and The Cloud. That total stands at 7,500, according to O2.

The operator said that the key differentiator of O2 Wi-Fi from other hotspot providers is that it will be “genuinely free”, whether users are O2 customers or not.

“O2 Wi-Fi will address the many shortcomings in the way most Wi-Fi hotspots work – you won’t need to buy a coffee to use it, and it won’t matter what SIM card is in your phone,” Ronan Dunne, O2 UK’s chief executive, wrote in a blog post.

The hotspots, located in places such as retail outlets and outdoor areas, will provide up to 24Mbps broadband connections with a fair use policy of 10GB per user per month across the network of hotspots, an O2 spokeswoman said.

Microsoft to launch Windows Phone 7 on Oct 11

win7mobileMicrosoft is holding simultaneous press conferences in London and New York on Oct 11. Although Microsoft has given no further details about what it will announce, it is widely expected to use the event to officially launch a range of handsets based on its new Windows Phone 7 operating system.

The devices, from a variety of handset makers, including HTC and Samsung, are not expected to be available in shops until Oct 21, with US availability following a few weeks later, on Nov 8.

Microsoft has high hopes for Windows Phone 7, the successor to the company’s popular but much-maligned Windows Mobile platform.

Windows Phone 7 represents a radical departure from previous Microsoft mobile platforms, with an emphasis on social networking and device integration.

Windows Phone 7 handsets to arrive on 21 October

windowsphone7Smartphones running Windows Phone 7 will hit shop shelves around Europe on 21 October, according to several reports.

The devices will go on sale then in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, the reports said. Microsoft will splash out on a number of launch events in the run-up to release, with Orange joining forces with the software maker for the UK debut, according to Neowin, quoting “sources familiar with the software giant’s plans”.

The date fits the likely timeframe, given that Microsoft completed development of its new mobile OS at the beginning of September and looks set to hold an open house to promote it in New York on 11 October. Despite this, it isn’t expected to arrive in the US until early November, and then only on GSM networks.

Windows Phone 7 marks a clean break with its predecessors, and the fresh start includes the use of technologies such as Silverlight. However, the new mobile OS has come under fire for its lack of some key features, such as the ability to cut and paste.

HTC, Samsung and Dell are among the handset makers that have signed up to sell Windows Phone 7 smartphones at its launch.
