Unfortunately there are so many suggestions about how to get this extra traffic it's very easy to get bogged down with endless optimizations, link strategy's and website submissions, so is there a set pattern you can follow without getting sidetracked?
Although the following steps are some of the keys to your online success they do not deal with any of the offline things you should be doing.
1. Make sure that you, or your web designer, design a website with lots of useful content that can attract both your potential customers and the major search engines.
Search engines must be able to find out what your website is all about. They need to find text and links on your web pages and they also need to find the keywords for which you want to have high rankings for your site.
2. Register your site with the major web directories and search engines. Large free directories include the Librarians Internet Index. Highly recommended search engines are Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, AOL Search and AllTheWeb.com.
Consider paying to be listed with other directories, like Best of the Web.
When you submit your website URL to a search engines, you basically ask the search engine spiders to visit your website and to evaluate it.
Don't fall for services that promise to submit your website to thousands of search engines. It will only result in thousands of spam messages. So it is time well spent for you or your web designer or SEO specialist to optimise your web pages before you submit them and then submit your site to the major search engines, such as those listed above. You'll end up with much better search engine rankings.
3. For quick results try Pay per Click(PPC) advertising.
PPC advertising has become an integral part of search engine optimisation. All PPC search engines are based on the auction principle. The relative drawbacks of PPC are cost and longevity. Some PPC keywords are highly competitive and therefore costly to generate. And unlike SEO efforts which can yield free traffic for years, PPC traffic will last only as long as you continue to pay for it.
Google Adwords is the most popular PPC scheme out there because of it's ease of use and high return rate.
Yahoo Advertising is also very popular.
Microsoft Bing Ads is the PPC offering from Microsoft.
4. Advertise your products or services on free (or cheap) online classified ad sites such as Craigslist, eBay Classified Ads and uk.freeads.net.
5. Issue a press release(s) about your business. Make sure your story is interesting and topical. And stick to mentioning one or two things rather than a whole list of news. Some of the things to cover can include a new product range - the introduction of a new service - a resurgence in popularity for a product - an interesting fact about your product/service or company) and submit it to all or some of these press release services - PR Leap, PR Newswire, www.pressbox.co.uk and www.prnewswire.co.uk.
6. Participate in blogs, groups, forums, and social networks that focus on your target market. Add posts and comments to websites covering your specialisation and add a link back to your website where possible.
7. Offer a link directory on your website which links to quality websites with a similar topic. Your visitors will appreciate such a resource and you'll provide incentive for other sites to link to your site.
You can add a "link to us" page to your website on which you promise to add other complementary sites to your link directory if they link back to you first.
Although this link building can take quite a long time to complete it is an essential step in your online success.
8. Write articles about the topics that your website visitors are interested in. After a while, other websites will link back to your articles.
Add social networking buttons to your articles to encourage your visitors to share them.
You can also send your articles to syndicate websites. They'll offer your articles to other websites. Just make sure that your article contains a link to your website so that other sites who publish your article will automatically link to you.
9. Everyone has some favourite software tools and utilities. Contact the publishers or developers and explain why you like their software programs. Some of them will request a permission to display your testimonial on their website, along with a link to your site.
You can also contact websites that don't offer software programs but interesting articles. Just make sure that you really stand behind what you say as it can backfire to you if you recommend bad products.
10. Prepare a robots.txt file to exclude anything you don't want the search engine spiders to see.
